Life as I Know It

I enjoyed seeing everyone at La Place for our last book club! Dinner and dessert was so nice! YUM! I can't wait to go back to enjoy a pastry and coffee some time. As always, fun conversation and it was good to catch up with you gals!

Our next book club will be on March 28th at 2:00 at Kristin Sullivan's new pad. She just moved so we will get directions a little closer to our meeting day. We will be reading Life as I Know It: A Novel by Melanie Rose. It is $10.20 on Amazon.

I look forward to seeing everyone next month!

February Book Club

Our next meeting is going to be on February 25th at 6:30 at "La Place," the new little French Bakery on Stuart Road. We are reading The Lightening Thief by Rick Riordan. It is Book 1 in the Percy Jackson & The Olympians Series. I found it on Amazon for $7.99. I went ahead and bought a box set of the first 3 books for $9.00. I will try to start it soon and can loan it out if anyone needs it. :)

Here is what it looks like (and what the mother of a 1 month old looks like on a rainy Wednesday. :) I hope you all have a great day!

January Book Club

We had a wonderful gift exchange at Amber's house on Sunday! Great food and a fun time hanging out and seeing everyone! I always look forward to our get-togethers so much! Keep an eye out for Amber's great lasagna recipe and maybe a "craft day," too!

Our next meeting will be January14th at Janna's house at 6:30. We will be reading Arabian Winds by Linda Chaikin. I have done some on-line searching and I don't think the book is currently in print. I have found some used copies on Amazon ranging from $10 - $30, with an additional $3.99 in shipping. I don't mind going ahead and buying a copy and trying to read it quickly, or just passing it around if I can't get to it soon. I looked for the book on Amazon, eBay, Books-A-Million, and Pathway Press. Let me know if you have any other ideas about where we can find it.

I hope everyone has a great week!

Christmas 2009

I can't believe it is almost the holiday season! Just 48 more days! WOW!

This holiday season, our Book Club decided to not read a book for next month, instead we are having a "Progressive Dinner" and a gift exchange for our December meeting. We will celebrate on Thursday, December 10th, 2009. We will start at Amber's house for appetizers, then to my house for the main course, finally, we will end up at Melanie's house for dessert and to exchange gifts. This is a girls-only event. Sorry guys, you get to take care of the kids!

We didn't discuss a start time for our dinner. How is 6? Or 6:30? What are your thoughts?

ALSO, everyone should have received an invitation to Elfster.com today. You should go to the website and register for our group. It will randomly select the "Secret Santa" who you will buy a gift for. There are places to ask anonymous questions an to give ideas to your Secret Santa.

Let me know if I forgot to list something here....and let me know if you did not receive an invitation to Elfster!

Have a great weekend!
Tamara

Strengths Finder 2.0

We had a great time on Saturday! Hot chili, a movie, and talking about the book. Lots of fun! We missed those of you who couldn't make it!

Our next meeting will be on Thursday, November 5th at 5:30. We will meet for dinner at a little sandwich place called Fresh To Order on Gunbarrel Road. http://www.fresh2order.com/ Looks like the serve sandwiches, salads, wine, and coffee, too. After we eat dinner, we will cross the street and have dessert at Gigi's Cupcakes. They are a new business that just opened at the beginning of September. Sounds like some sweet deliciousness!

The book we will be reading is Strength Finders 2.0 by Tim Rath. I ordered it from Amazon.com for $13.77. Books-A-Million.com has it for $13.30 (club price) or $14.78 at regular price. I think that it will be interesting to discuss and discover our different strengths and how they play into our roles at work, in friendships, and in book club!

And, I did a little research to see if you have to buy the book to get the access code. You can buy only the access code at this website: http://strengthstest.com/strengthsfinder_20.php but it is $17.95. So it looks like a better deal to go ahead and buy the book. If someone finds another site with a cheaper price, let us know!

The Black Dahlia

Our next book club meeting will be on Saturday, October 3rd at 6:00 at Melanie Lyon's house. We are reading James Ellroy's The Black Dahlia.

I started it two days ago and am half way finished. It is different from our previous books but a good change. I can't wait to hear what everyone else thinks about it!

I ordered my copy from Amazon and it was around $8. Since the book was originally published in the late '80s, I am sure McKay's is bound to have a copy or two for sale.

The movie, The Black Dahlia, was released in 2006 and stars Josh Hartnett, Hilary Swank, Aaron Eckhart, and Scarlett Johansson. We will meet at Melanie's house to discuss the book and watch the movie.

I look forward to seeing everyone next month!

Pology Cookies

I am posting this little blog here because of the relavence to our Book Club's July book, Shelter Me. I will probably also tell this story on my blog, The Life and Times of the Humps.

Last Friday, I had an ultrasound scheduled so we could find out the gender of our baby. Ellis and I were super excited. As a matter of fact, Ellis's sister planned her vacation around this ultrasound and Ellis's birthday rafting trip down the Hiwassee. She had been visiting from Northern Ohio for two weeks. It was getting a little long (and she was missing her hubby) so she had contemplated going home earlier in the week. But knowing that we had this ultrasound coming up, she decided to stay.

In addition, Ellis took the entire day off, as did I, for this special day. Since Ellis is working 5 10 hour days, he was losing 10 hours of over time to see our little one. When I made the appointment, I did not know that this day was a big in-service day for the school system, so it was a big deal that I was missing it, too.

We arrived at the doctor's office promptly at 9:20, our appt time. Cassie, Ellis's sister, had her car packed so she could leave after we found out about the baby. Since the flyer from the doctor's office said that we could only have 2 guests, I had a close friend meet us at the office to sit in the waiting room with our nephew, Matthew. So, I had a big entourage. Me, Ellis, Cassie, Mattie, and Andrea.

When I checked in, I was told that the ultrasound machine was down. The office decided on Thursday to not call me and tell me this because I had an appointment to see a doctor anyway.

Wow. I was pretty floored. If I had known on Thursday evening, I would have probably sent Ellis on to work, helped Cassie get an early start on the road to OH, and let Andrea sleep in. At that point, I became the "squeaky wheel." I talked to two of the ladies in the business office about any other possibilities for this ultrasound taking place today. At first, there seemed to be another option, but it quickly dissolved. Then, when we went to see the doctor, I explained that we had a lot of schedules that were changed and altered for these people to be there with me that day.

Ok, the truth is... I was pushy. But in a nice, Southern way.

Finally, another doctor's office gave our technician permission to use their machine. We quickly drove over to this other office and quietly snuck in to their ultrasound room. All of the drama was worth it when we found out that we were having a little girl!

I was so thankful that the doctor's office worked with us that I vowed to make them some cookies for my next visit.

We did get to see little Hattie Humphres on Friday, but the machine that we viewed her on was not as superior as the machine at my doctor's office. So, I was called on Monday morning to set up a follow-up ultrasound. The purpose of this big ultrasound was to measure the baby and determine how the baby was doing, growing, and to have an opportunity to video our remarkable little girl. So, my follow-up was scheduled for Wednesday.

On Tuesday, after work, I stopped at the grocery and picked up some fresh ingredients for cookies for the ultrasound technician and the ladies in the office. As I was baking, I thought, "Are these Pology Cookies?" I was thankful for all that the people in the office did for me. So I wanted to let them know that it was important to me. I don't think I was mean. I was just firm. But in some way, I think these were some Pology Cookies for rocking the boat (not my normal MO).

When I gave them to my ultrasound technician, she was very pleased. As a matter of fact, she said, "That just makes my day!"

And that was worth it. I like Pology Cookies. There is something special about baking them and thinking about who you are making them for. Sending positive thoughts through food. I like it!

Time Traveler's Wife and Good Dog Fun!

Hey ladies! We had a great book club meeting on Saturday at Good Dog in Chattanooga. Husbands, kids, sister, and nephew all seemed to have a great time! Food was great and the book discussion was a lot of fun! For those of you who couldn't make it, do you agree with who was cast as characters of the movie version of Shelter Me?

Janie - Winona Ryder

Father Jake - Topher Grace

Aunt Jude - Maggie Smith

Cormac - John Favreau

Tug - we never really chose anyone, did we? I would like to submit two guys, from the HBO series Rome... (although both of these pictures are a little too dashing.... we need a tool belt in there somewhere :) )

Ray Stevenson
or
James Purefoy

What do you think?

On to next month, we made an exciting choice! Our next meeting will be on Saturday, August 29th. That is a little less than 4 weeks from now, so you gotta get moving and reading on this! Our book is The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger.

It is on Amazon for $8.22. Ellis and I looked for it at Barnes & Noble on Saturday and it was $14 there. $9.31 online at booksamillion.com, $8.21 if you are a club member. It was published in 2004, so you might be able to find it at McKay's.

Our meeting will be on Saturday, August 29th for a Matinee of Time Traveler's Wife. We will shoot for the later matinee, maybe around 4 or so. I will let you know what time the showings actually are the week before. Also, is Premiere ok? Or would you rather go to the Rave? Also, we would like to go somewhere afterwards for coffee, snacks, or dinner to discuss the movie and the book and decide which one we like better!

I hope that works out for everyone!

Shelter Me on Saturday

I am hoping we won't be trying to find shelter from the rain on Saturday! The news today said 30% chance, so hopefully we will miss it!

Also, we are pushing the meeting time back to 4:30. I hope to see you all then!
